With book by Dennis Kelly and original songs by Tim Minchin, Matilda continues to thrill sold-out audiences of all ages around the world.

Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She's unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Over the course of her first term at school, Matilda and Miss Honey have a profound effect on each other's lives, as Miss Honey begins not only to recognize but also appreciate Matilda's extraordinary personality. Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however – the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don't abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils' saving grace!

Kick off With Reading program 2020

It is that time of year again when staff and students at Moss Vale High School are gifted a book to read. Our Kick off with Reading program is now in its seventh year thanks to the kind support of the P&C which have donated $12,000 towards this year’s book White Bird by R J Palacio. It is a beautiful hard cover graphic novel which is a continuation of the Wonder story which was a best seller a few years and was made into a Hollywood film. Those students in Year 11 and 12 will remember that Wonder was the Kick off with Reading book for 2016 and the theme for the year was “choose kindness”.

This year the theme which accompanies the book is “Let your light shine” as the graphic novel expands upon the story of one the main characters from Wonder. Julian was in the same class as Auggie and he could be characterised as somewhat of a bully to Auggie because of his facial difference.

If you read the companion book Auggie and Me you will realise that there was more to Julian than his horrible treatment of Auggie. This graphic novel begins with Julian on a facetime with his Grandmother Sara, as he wants to work on his family history school assignment and ask her about her experiences in France during the Second World War. His grandmother is at first unwilling to talk about what happened to her as a Jew under Nazi occupation as it was painful and traumatic. But as George Santayana reminds us (and is quoted in the book) “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” She feels it time to talk about it.

So we travel back to 1943 in German Occupied France where the Sara is at school and sees her Jewish peers and family arrested by soldiers and taken away. The graphic novel certainly gives readers an opportunity to all learn a lot about Vichy France and the horrifying experiences that many went through in that dark time of history.

Like with the story Wonder there are some inspirational characters who are discriminated or bullied for being different but don’t let the way they are treated extinguish their light or sense of hope. As Sara’s father Max tries explains to his daughter about why the Nazis single out Jewish people:

“I try not to think in terms of good and bad. I prefer to think in terms of light and dark. I believe that all people have a light that shines inside of them. This light allows us to see into other people's hearts, to see the beauty there. The love. The sadness. The humanity. Some people, though, have lost this light. They have darkness inside them, so that is all they see in others: darkness. No beauty. No love. Why do they hate us? Because they cannot see our light. Nor can they extinguish it. As long as we shine our light, we win. That is why they hate us. Because they will never take our light from us."

Whilst this is a book you most certainly can read quickly, this is a book you should not rush. Take time to appreciate the emotional story, the perfect pairing of the illustrations and the text which invites you to be thoughtful and really think about the important lessons from history we need to take heed of in order for us to not repeat any of the terrible mistakes.

As with each Kick off with Reading book students will be looking at aspects of the book in their various classes with their teachers. The book needs to be kept safe and be ready to use in class when the teachers request it. Be sure to write your name in your book so it can be returned if it gets misplaced. Latest advice on novel coronavirus

Current advice from the Australian Government Department of Health for parents and staff in relation to the Novel Coronavirus is:

· People who have been in contact with any confirmed Novel Coronavirus cases must be isolated in their home for 14 days following exposure;

· Returned travellers who have been in Hubei Province of China must be isolated in their home for 14 days after leaving Hubei Province, other than for seeking individual medical care.

Students and staff currently excluded from schools are those who:

· over the last 14 days has visited the province of Hubei in central China. They should not return to school or child care services for a period of 14 days after leaving China, as the coronavirus’ incubation period can be as long as two weeks or

· are under medical assessment or

· have been diagnosed with the Novel Coronavirus or

· have had close contact with a confirmed case of the Novel Coronavirus. The Ministry of Health has processes in place to identify any close contacts of cases confirmed in Australia.

In addition The NSW Ministry of Health and NSW Department of Education have recommended that:

· Any student or staff member who was in China, including Hong Kong but excluding the province of Hubei over the past 14 days is recommended not attend school or child care services for a period of 14 days after leaving, as the Novel Coronavirus’ incubation period can be as long as two weeks.

Students who returned to Australia more than 14 days ago and have shown no symptoms are able to return to school this week.

There has been a small number of cases of confirmed Novel Coronavirus in New South Wales.

The Ministry of Health has processes in place to identify any close contacts of cases confirmed in Australia. Advice about not attending school would be provided to these close contacts by the Ministry of Health.

Consistent with current guidelines, staff and students who are unwell with respiratory illness should remain at home until symptoms resolve. In accordance with our current practice if any child becomes unwell we will implement our infection control guidelines and follow the advice provided by the Ministry of Health as appropriate.

Thank you to parents enquiring about this issue. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and take advice received from NSW Ministry of Health and NSW Department of Education to ensure we are responding to the situation appropriately.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Mufti Day - Do it in a Dress

Friday 1 November, we are asking students and staff to ‘Do It In a Dress' to raise funds for educating girls in Africa and other developing countries where over 66 million girls will never receive an education. This initiative is all about raising funds to educate girls in developing countries who would otherwise fail to receive an education and are often married off during childhood. Our school community will hold a mufti-day where staff and students will wear a school dress, symbolically, for the 60 millions girls, or more, who are unable to wear a dress and attend school. SRC students will be collecting money donations during roll call until the event.

Students are reminded to wear a dress that is respectful and does not denigrate the purpose and concept of the day.

If students choose not to make a donation then they will be expected to be in regular school uniform.

All students on the day must wear enclosed leather shoes.

PBS, and our school community, is committed to raising awareness of important social and global issues. We want our school to be involved in making a positive difference to the world around us. Canteen Recognition

Last Thursday 15 August 2019, Colleen O'Rouke, NSW Government South Western Division, Health Promotion Officer, visited our school canteen.

This visit highlighted the hard work and dedication of our cantten staff in providing healthy and nutritious food, not only for our students but also our staff.

This comes with the depatrtments new standards that will be enforced by the end of 2019.

To-date, only 640 government schools have submitted their menu and been successful in obtaining these standards.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Recently students attended an assembly and received information of each activity being offered for Activity Week in December 2019.

Student selection day for Activity Week 2019 will take place on Friday 14 June.

NO PAYMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED PRIOR TO 14 JUNE.

Payment of a non-refundable deposit of approximately one third of the total cost paid will secure a position in the activity, dependent on completing payments by the end of Term 3 and the Activity not being full.

If a student wishes to select an activity that is $200 or greater in value, all school subject fees must be paid before the selection date.

Subject Selection Tues 18 June 2019

Subject Selection sessions for all Year 8 & Year 10 students and their parents/caregivers will be held on Tuesday 18 June in the school hall.

The purpose of the evening is to:

1. Inform students and their parents/caregivers of the subject selection process.

2. Advise what subjects will be on offer for 2020.

3. Provide an opportunity for discussion with Head Teachers and Teachers from each faculty; and

4. Provide an opportunity for discussion with representatives from TAFE Illawarra, University of Wollongong, Australian Careers Business College & NSW Health with options for courses offered outside school.

All Year 8 & Year 10 students (along with their parents/caregivers) are encouraged to attend their respective information sessions and gain as much information as possible before making their subject selections for 2020.

Session times are: Year 8 4:45 - 5:30pm and Year 10 5:45 - 6:45pm.

Subject information booklets will be distributed at these sessions. If your child is absent, they may collect a book from Ms Youman on Wednesday. Students will have a week to further explore subject options and gather advice before making their choices online.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

Students are reminded to still wear fully enclosed leather shoes and to bring all their required equipment for practical subjects such as their PDHPE uniform, Tech and Science equipment. All clothing must be appropriate with shoulders covered.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Our PBS program is all about creating a positive school culture and helping our students to become successful, responsible, caring and compassionate citizens as they move beyond the confines of our school community. As part of our PBS program, we have organised numerous fundraisers for worthwhile charities and to foster a sense of ‘giving back' to the wider community.
Friday 2 November, we are asking students and staff to ‘Do It In a Dress' to raise funds for educating girls in Africa and other developing countries where over 66 million girls will never receive an education. Our school community will put on a school dress, symbolically, for the millions of girls who will never get that chance. SRC students will be collecting money donations during roll call until the event.
PBS, and our school community, is committed to raising awareness of important social and global issues. We want our school to be involved in making a positive difference to the world around us. Thank you to all of our staff and students who give generously to our fundraisers and passionately support our initiatives in raising awareness of social issues.

Year 9 MOVEmber Fundraiser

Year 9 students are invited to take the challenge of walking or running 60 kilometres over the month of November. This 60 kilometres is representative of the 60 men we lose to suicide each hour. Students will be asking family and friends to sponsor them along the way and every dollar raised will go towards the Movember Foundation, whose aim is to raise awareness of men’s health issues.

There will be a number of initiatives during Movemeber to help students reach their physical activity goals such as a walking school bus, lunchtime sports competitions and recess walking clubs.

More information about events will be released on the schools social media and given to students during roll call.

Physical Activity for Everyone or PA4E1 is an Australian first program designed to help keep students physically active and healthy. Our school has agreed to be part of a research trial of the program, where some schools get the program now and some schools get the program later. This lets the researchers find out if the program works, as they can see what is different between the schools who get the program now and those who get the program later. The researchers are asking Year 7 students if they would be happy to help with finding out if the program works. This will involve completing an online survey, wearing a physical activity monitor or accelerometer and having their height, weight and waist measured in Term 1 or 2 next year (2019).

An information pack has been distributed to all families with students in Year 7. It is in an envelope from Hunter New England Health and contains a letter and consent form. Please read the letter, complete the consent form and return it to the PDHPE staffroom, in the PA4E1 box. If you need another copy of the information pack, please ask Miss Leet and Ms Middleton.

Youth Suicide- Parent Info Session 5:30pm Wed 29 August 2018

The mental health and wellbeing of our students is very important to us and we are proud to be one of only a few local schools who are rolling out the Lifelines Suicide prevention program to our staff, parents and students. Our staff have learnt about mental health and suicide in a recent workshop and now you can too.

We encourage all parents to learn how to recognise warning signs and talk confidently about suicide by joining us on Wednesday 29 August at 5:30pm here at our school.

Moss Vale High School presents our 2018 musical...The Wiz!

The Wiz was written, in part, to subvert mainstream white culture and provide African-American performers a voice in theatre, and to give African-American audiences a show they could relate to. Presenting an "other" world in which African-American characters existed gave audiences a sense of hope and belief for the future. The story, however, is not limited to African-American concerns. It is a story of self-discovery and self-belief. It is a story that invites audiences of all social, cultural, and racial backgrounds, to explore themselves and their greater role and purpose in society. The show has been performed by countless amateur musical societies and high schools, and our cast are excited to bring this funky show to the Moss Vale High stage.

Connecting Country Schools

Our school has been included in the Connecting Country Schools (CCS) project, which is delivering upgraded wireless connectivity and internet access to more than 900 schools around the state.

Planning for installations at our school has commenced with our assigned Technical Officer from the Department's IT Directorate, who are managing this project.

CCS will deliver upgraded and reliable wireless access in all our learning spaces, assisting teachers to deliver future focused learning to prepare our students for digital age jobs.

Improved wireless and internet services will also give students more chances to connect and collaborate and greater access to online knowledge databases, streaming media, educational institutions and experts.

We are working with our Technical Officer to ensure that disruptions during the installation are kept to a minimum.

External contractors who will visit the school to undertake work are required to have a Working With Children Check.

As you know, Activity Week takes places this year 11-13 December. There are many activities that involve swimming or water related participation. Department guidelines, however, require students to pass a Water challenge test before participating in water activities. All students participating in Activity Week besides those doing Music and other Madness, Movie Making, Art Experience and Lantastic will need to complete the test. This test will be held at Moss Vale Indoor pool on 1st November. It will cost students $4 to be paid to the front office at school. The permission notes can be picked up outside the PDH/PE office. The actual test requires students to complete the following.

Entry – Slide in entry into shallow water and walk five metres.
(Please note: This is the minimum benchmark for yellow wrist banded students).

Survival Swimming – 25m swim with recognisable strokes.

Survival Sequence – Scull, float or tread water for 1 minute, call out for help once.

Exit – Exit the water unassisted.

Rescue Sequence – Demonstrate a simple voice rescue.

Following completion of ‘The Challenge' all students will be classified as either proficient swimmers or non-proficient swimmers. Proficient swimmers will be issued on Activity Week with a blue wrist band and will be deemed safe to participate in the aquatic activity. Non-proficient students will be issued with a yellow wrist band and can participate in shallow water activities. Students must wear these bands for the duration of the water activity.

With the introduction of the state wide Learning Business and Management Reform to our school on 24 July 2017, receipting of payments will be restricted as follows:

No payments can be accepted after 30 June until the new system is operational;

Some general payments such as fees may be accepted from Wednesday 26 July, if all goes well;

Activity Week payments can be accepted from Thursday 27 July;

No direct deposits will be possible after 30 June as the school bank account will be permanently closed;

Parent on line payment via the school website is the preferred method of payment.

We ask for your patience and understanding while our staff are transitioning to this new system.

Parents and Caregivers of Years 7 - 11 students are invited to come along and chat with teachers. This is an opportunity to raise any concerns or receive feedback regarding their learning.

Booking details will be sent home via Year 7-11 students containing a unique code for each family to be entered online to request interview bookings.

We have decided to continue to use Edval online interview booking system. This year we have decided to split the load and offer families with the surname beginning with the letters A-K interviews taking place on WEDNESDAY 21 JUNE and then the remaining families L-Z on WEDNESDAY 28 JUNE. Once the majority of parents have requested interviews by the dates indicated below, the final schedules will be generated by the school. Parents may then adjust their bookings online if needed, or add more. (For families with students with different surnames, please select just one day if this make things easier for you.)

It is important to request your online bookings, A-K by Friday 16 June and L-Z by Friday 23 June. Then A-K schedules can be printed by logging back on to Edval on Monday 19 June from 5pm with L-Z families available Monday 26 June.

If you are unable to access the Internet please direct your child to either Ms Youman or Ms Campbell who will make a paper version available to you.

Our annual P&C AGM will take place in the staff common room, via the front office at 5:30pm. P&C Membership ($2 fee per family) is required to be up-to-date, enabling you to vote.

Our parents & citizens' association (P&C) brings the school community together. Parents, teachers and community members can help meet the needs of the school community and contribute to decisions about the school.

The P&C also raises funds that help finance improvements to our school and provide additional resources. If you think you would like to become involved, please come along and help us make a difference.

Masquerade Mufti Day- Friday 31 March

Our Positive Behaviour for Success team will be holding a school mufti-day on Friday, 31 March. The theme of the day is ‘Masquerade' and links in with our Kick Off with Reading book Everything to Live For, by Turia Pitt.

Students are encouraged to wear mufti, are asked to wear a masquerade mask (eyes only- not whole face type) and to make a gold coin donation. The mask is only to be worn at school, NOT while travelling to and from school.

This fundraiser will enable us to donate to Turia's charity – Interplast. Donations to Interplast contribute directly to changing futures today. This will give someone in need the chance to have life-changing surgery, and it will also give someone the opportunity to learn new skills that will benefit their community for years to come. Kick Off with Reading Program 2017

Book selection for 2017.....

Next week, we begin our annual ‘Kick Off with Reading' program across the school. This program is now in its fourth year, and has had excellent feedback from staff and students alike. The book selected for 2017 is Everything to Live For, by Turia Pitt. Turia writes about her experience of being trapped by a bushfire whilst on an ultra-marathon in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, her resulting burns, and challenging recovery. Her story highlights the power of a resilient spirit as well as the deep well of support and generosity that can be demonstrated in difficult times.

Congratulations to the C6 "Vocal Rollers" Roll Call group who were successful in their audition to sing at the Sydney Opera House. The vocalists were chosen to perform a solo item of "Different Worlds" at the Festival of Instrumental Music Jacaranda Concert on Wednesday 24 August. PBS has been running at MVHS for four years, and in that time has brought about a wonderful change in school-wide behaviour and pride. The program works by instilling three core values in every aspect of school life. At MVHS, our values of SAFE, RESPECTFUL and RESPONSIBLE behaviour are upheld through clear expectations and consistent consequences.

An integral part of PBS is celebrating and rewarding positive behaviour. At MVHS, we do this through our regular school assemblies, and through the Merit system, in which students work towards increasingly prestigious awards. For the past two years, this has gone hand-in-hand with the Vivo system—on online program which rewards students with prizes they can choose.

Students and staff have embraced Vivos with a passion, and the wonderful Vivo shop holds a prized position in the school library. However, Vivos cost money and it is for this that we are raising money from the upcoming trivia night. All the money raised from our trivia night will go directly to our PBS program.

Our much-beloved staff member, Mr Antony Stott, passed away on Saturday 16 July , during a game of football at Thirroul. Antony's death has left our school community in shock and we are all extremely saddened by the loss of our colleague, friend and teacher from the Maths faculty.
Antony was loved and respected by all with whom he came in contact, always showing kindness to those around him. He was an outstanding teacher who naturally struck up a rapport with all of his students and the overwhelming number of tributes is testament to the students' respect and admiration for Antony.

Our school community would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Antony's parents, Julie and Gary, his brother, Kevin, his Maths colleagues and to all who knew and loved him.

Subject Selection sessions will be held on Wednesday 27 July, 2016 in the school Hall for all Year 8 & Year 10 students and their parents/caregivers.

The purpose of the evening is to: 1. inform students and parents/caregivers of the subject selection process; 2.advise what subjects will be on offer for 2017; 3. provide an opportunity for one-on-one discussions with Head teachers and teachers from each faculty; and 4. provide an opportunity for discussion with a representative from Illawarra TAFE, University of Wollongong, Australian Careers Business College & NSW Health with options for courses offered outside school. All Year 8 and Year 10 students (along with their parents/caregivers) are encouraged to attend their respective information sessions and gain as much information as possible before making their subject selections for 2017. Session times are: Year 8 5:00 - 5:45pm and Year 10 6:00 - 6:45pm. Subject information books will be distributed to all students. If your child is absent they may collect a book from Mr Warwick or Mrs Norris on Thursday. Students will have a week to further explore subject options and gather advice before making their choices online using EDVAL.

Parents of Years 7 - 10 students to take place on Tuesday 21 June from 4:00 - 6:30pm in our school hall.

Booking details have been sent home to all Year 7-10 students containing a unique code for each family to be entered online to request interview bookings.

We have decided to continue to use Edval online interview booking system. Once the majority of parents have requested interviews, the final schedule will be generated by the school. Parents may then adjust their bookings online if needed, or add more.

It is important to request your bookings by Friday 17 June.

School photographs are scheduled to be taken by Advancedlife Photography on Friday March 18, 2016.

Whilst an envelope and flyer will be distributed shortly, if possible it is Advancedlife's preference that ordering be completed online to reduce administration and potential security issues related to the return of cash and envelopes on photo day to the photographers.

Orders for packages and sibling photographs can be placed securely online at www.advancedlife.com.au using our school's unique 9 digit Online Order Code (PFX DNF FTL). Online portrait and group package orders are due by photography day. All students are photographed in their group (unless, 'not for publication' was ticked on enrolment form) and portrait photographs regardless of whether or not they are purchasing photographs. Moss Vale High School warmly invites all parents and carers to participate in the Partners in Learning parent survey. This is a follow-on from the Student Tell Them From Me survey currently being completed by students at our school . The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Being involved in this survey will help our school understand the perspectives of parents and carers on their child's experience at school. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online at home or on public computers. The survey will typically takes 15 minutes or less to complete and remains completely anonymous. The parent survey is now open for your entries and will conclude 5 October 2015. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, however, your responses are very much appreciated and help us build an even better school for your children and our students, together.

Student selection day for Activity Week 2015 will take place on Wednesday June 17.

NO PAYMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED PRIOR TO JUNE 17.

If a student wishes to select an activity that is $200 or greater in value, all school fees must be paid before the selection date.

Nepal / PBS Mufti Day fundraiser a success!

Our target was to raise $1200 to support the Nepalese Earthquake Appeal and our PBS program. Well done, everybody! We exceeded our expectations and have sent off a $1200 donation to Nepal as well as $200 going towards our PBS program. We are proud of everyone's efforts.

Light Horse Boy written by Dianne Wolfer-

The story of Light Horse Boy is based on themes and stories from World War 1, the Gallipoli campaign and the story of the Anzacs – a very important and special focus for us all this year as part of the centenary commemorations of the ANZAC and World War 1. This is a story that has meaning for us all.

The Kick Off With Reading program is focused on developing and encouraging our whole school community to read and for students to develop their comprehension and writing skills. The book will be used in a range of classes throughout the school to not only develop reading and comprehension skills but also support the development of student skills in writing. The book is a multi modal text which allows the teachers to use it to teach and support a variety of learning focus areas.

We encourage all our parents to access their child's book, read it and become part of our school's Kick Off With Reading program!

This year our student photos will be taken over two days.

Year 12 photo day, CAPA & other interest groups will be taken on Friday March 13. (Payment envelopes for Year 12 will be given Mon 2 March).

All students and teachers are photographed in their year group and portraits photographs regardless of whether or not they are purchasing photographs.

2) Students are expected to be dressed neatly and in full school uniform on the day. No tracksuit pants. Please be aware that jewellery is to be kept to a minimum and hair should be worn in an appropriate way i.e. no fancy hairstyles.

3) Payment envelopes are to be returned ON THE DAY or online payments received by Advanced Life before the day.

4) Correct payment to be enclosed or credit card details written on envelope. (The school does not handle this money).

On Thursday 26 February, Senior Constable Gary Mutton, our school liaison police officer, will be coming to the school to present an information session for parents. He will be discussing the legal ramifications of the inappropriate use of social media, students misusing these types of technology and suggest ways that the technology can be used safely.

Congratulatons to Luke Webb (Yr 9 - 1574 points), who was the winner of the IPAD Mini with Olivia Yearsley (Yr 9 - 1560 points) a very close runner-up. Our special award for Yr 7 students only - an IPOD Touch was won by Jemima Huggett (1131 points) with Joel Hinchcliffe (1097 points) as runner-up.

We would like to thank Sheree Sheather and Moss Vale Subway for generously sponsoring our school merit system and Vivo online rewards. Students accumulate vivo points for achieving in a variety of academic and extra-curricular areas at school, and these points can be used to purchase items from the Vivo shop. Sheree has donated vouchers for students to purchase from Moss Vale Subway. The vouchers can be redeemed for a 'foot long sub', drink and cookie. Yr 11 students will sit their final exams throughout Week 9. Students are reminded to make sure that they are prepared and arrive with all the equipment needed before entering the hall. If students miss an exam due to illness, a doctors certificate is required. Students must sign out at the office at the completion of their exam.

Social Media Information Session for Parents - 6pm Thursday 28 August 2014

On Thursday 28 August Senior Constable Gary Mutton, our school liaison police officer, will be coming to the school to present an information session on the inappropriate use of social media. He will discuss the legal ramifications of students misusing these types of technology and suggest ways that the technology can be used safely.

We urge all parents to attend this very important information session.

The information session will be held in the library and will start at 6.00pm.

A recent staff brain storming session on the PBS Core Value - RESPONSIBLE, resulted in a whole staff discussion on how teachers could support our students in achieving their best learning outcomes by being responsible learners.

Strategies such as - bringing all required equipment to class; being mentally prepared; reviewing the previous lesson; checking on homework; using planners and diaries.

The Positive Behaviour For Success recent fundraiser has raised over $600 for the school. The students and staff widely supported the Viva World Cup Mufti Day with everyone loyal in their team colours.

The whole staff is continuing to support the PBS Program by adopting classroom rules and will be consistant in their implementation in the classroom. A set of five clear rules will be rolled out by the end of term 4.

A reward excursin for those students who have achieved the required level will be held 25 June. Those students will travel to Macarthur Square with staff to enjoy their success at school.

The purpose of the Portfolio Class is to provide a program for students who are performing beyond their stage in a number of areas, and who are highly motivated to achieve their personal best.

Nominations for the Portfolio Class may come from the student, their teacher, their parent/s or a combination. A nomination form is attached.

The students who are nominated will be invited to Moss Vale High School to take part in a portfolio workshop on Tuesday 12 August 2014. Please see the attached letter for more details.

MVHS School Photo day will take place during Wednesday 26 Feb. Student individual, group and special group photo options are available to order on envelopes provided to all during roll call. Payment can be made online or included in envelope - envelopes are required to be brought along with the students on the day. Images are later included on school library cards. Students are then able to use these library cards as a form of photo identification throughout 2014. For further assistance, call our office.

Awards Presentation Evening 2013 - CHANGE OF VENUE

Our annual Award Presentation Evening will be held in our Hall this year. 2013 Award recipients will receive their invitations either by mail (Yr12 students) or during roll call. Students and their guests will be required to gather and be seated for a 6:30pm start on Thursday 12 December.

Youth Hub - Official Opening

Co-ordinators are looking forward to the opening of the new Highlands Youth Hub on Friday 29 November. The formal part of the day will happen between 2:30 and 3:30pm.

As many young people as possible, aged between 12 and 18, are encouraged to come along and join in the planned activities to celebrate their new Hub. There will be food, drink, and lots of activities from 3:30 to 8pm.(See attached)

Shuttle buses will run from the Memorial Hall, Bendooley Street Bowral to the Hub; starting at 3:30pm.

Buses home will go to Mittagong, Colo Vale; Hill Top; Bowral and Moss Vale. Drop off will be at a central location in each village.

All activities are supervised and this is a drug and alcohol free event.

50th Anniversary Open Days

To celebrate our schools Golden Anniversary 1963-2013 there are three days of festivities open to the community:

Fri 25th October - School open to the community 11am - 2pm. Visitors please report to the Administration Office first to sign in before being taken on an escorted tour. There will be historical displays and catering available. Anniversary publications on sale throughout the day.

Fri 25th October - Anniversary Concert 6:30pm - 8:45pm in the school hall. $5 entry - CAPA launching the Anniversary CD featuring music presented by students, ex students and staff.

Boys Hockey Team - Top 8 in State

The entire school community congratulates the boys hockey team for winning their match against Elizabeth Macarthur High School, 5-nil, placing them in the top 8 in the state. The team has progressed by defeating Bowral, Queanbeyan, Goulburn, Figtree and Penrith High Schools. The team will play in Newcastle in a round robin series against the remaining schools in the state on 12 and 13 September. We wish them well.

School Uniform Changes

Throughout Term 1 we have undertaken a full School Uniform review, by Term 4 2012 MVHS will have its own uniform shop situated inside the school near the canteen. This has been a long process involving two P&C meetings where voting took place along with votes of the staff and junior students.

With all major uniform changes there is a large lead-in time to allow students to 'grow out' of their current uniform and to avoid additional costs to families. The changes do not need to affect senior students unless they wish to purchase new garments. The expectation will be that as students need new items, the new styles will be purchased.

The items that will be UNCHANGED are the:

navy girls pants and the grey boys pants
sports uniform
the navy woollen jumper with logo

The items that will CHANGE are the:

white polo and cotton button-up shirt
jersey style jumper
girls' skirt (shape only - tartan will remain)
boys sox which will now be grey
senior personalised jersey which will remain constant in style.

The major change is that there will no longer be a white shirt of any type. The white will now be the colour of the senior blue shirt, with logo. The girls shirt will be more tailored to fit and have 'piping' around the colour in either navy blue or red (the vote was too close to decide). The full change over of all garments could take up to 2-3 years.

Positive Behaviour for Success

Moss Vale High School's Positive Behaviour for Success program has been introduced this term and is led by a dynamic team consisting of Mrs Suzi Williams, Mr Robert Berman, Mrs Janeen Pepping, Ms Michelle Virtue, Ms Lauren Cordingley, Mr Dave Sanders, Mrs Jenny Wells, Ms Helen Campbell, Mrs Kirrilly Sims, Mr Nick Sims, Ms Josie Davidson and Mrs Patricia Holmes. The team has established our school's core values of RESPECTFUL, SAFE AND RESPONSIBLE behaviour for all students to be successful at school and in lfe. The program has been introduced to the school community through the use of 'free and frequent' tickets in order to reward positive behaviour. Each week the team will announce a new focus for expected behaviour where students can earn tickets for simply 'doing the right thing'. These tickets then go into the draw for each Monday assembly where prizes can be won, ranging from canteen vouchers, to cinema tickets and gift vouchers.

In week 9 the focus was on having respect for our school environment by placing all litter in the bins, and in week 10 we focused on respectful, safe and responsible behaviour in the canteen area.

Closing the Gap

Two hours south of Sydney, Moss Vale High School has been working hard to ‘Close the Gap' of inequality for Indigenous Australians in their community. Over the last three years the school has gone from strength to strength in awareness, support and opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth. This represents great development from previous years as partnerships have worked to improve knowledge and support of Indigenous youth within the school and district.
